formerly the Canadian Museum of Civilization
With its sinuous lines reflected in the Ottawa River and its spectacular view of the Parliament Buildings, Canada’s most popular museum invites you to learn about the events, the people and the objects that shaped our country’s history. And it’s busy getting ready to offer visitors even more!
Visit the many special or permanent exhibitions, marvel at the world’s largest indoor Totem pole collection and explore First Nations’ traditions and achievements.
The Canadian Children's Museum has something for the whole family! And the IMAX® THEATRE always guarantees an extraordinary film experience.
Starting on July 1, 2017, the 150th anniversary of Confederation, a new exhibition, the largest ever mounted since the Museum opened in 1989, will invite you to relive Canada’s history and experience this vast land, from the end of the most recent ice age to the present – including the birth and growth of New France.
In the meantime, the Virtual Museum of New France awaits you on the Museum’s website! Find out what brought French settlers to North America. Follow the explorers, missionaries, mapmakers, soldiers, coureurs des bois and Native allies along the roads and rivers of New France. Accompany the first European colonists in their daily lives and learn all about their everyday experiences and their attitudes and beliefs. You’ll come away with a better understanding of the history, culture and living heritage of the families that carried French from Acadia to the Upcountry around the Great Lakes and all the way to Louisiana!
An architectural gem
Designed by Native Canadian architect Douglas Cardinal, the Museum building is recognized as one of the architectural masterpieces of the 20th century. An essential destination for visitors from around the world!
